The path to and through the University of Vienna is not the easiest. It helps to know where to find the right information and who can help you with any problems. Here is our Best of FYI to help you get a clear overview at the start of the semester.
(Update: February 2026)
1) Course catalog
It’s best to bookmark it right away: u:find, you’ll need the course catalog regularly. Here you’ll find all the important information about courses for the respective semester.
There you will find information such as:
- Time, instructor, type of course (hover your mouse pointer over the abbreviation before the title and the full name will appear),
- Location of the course (if you click on the location in u:find, you will be taken to the room information in u:space and you will see exactly where you need to go)
- Attendance requirement (either it says “prüfungsimmanent” (exam-related), in which case you must attend, or it says nothing, in which case attendance is not required),
- Registration period, link to registration (if registration is already open), etc.
What few students know:
- In u:find, you can create a personal watchlist. Simply log in to u:find with your u:account and click on the star next to the course title in the detailed view.
- In the detailed view of the course, there is also an iCal link. This allows you to export the course dates to your own calendar. However, this only works if dates for the course are already available.
2) Reach new heights with u:space
The student portal u:space can do quite a lot! In u:space, you can register for courses, change your personal data, download study documents, plan your semester, and much more. The u:space exam pass displays your curriculum, and with the u:space semester planner, you can create your timetable for the semester. Did you know that you can also find room information in u:space? This way, you always know the best way to get to the lecture halls and seminar rooms.
You can find even more interesting information about the u:space universe on the overview page “Discover u:space.”
3) u:card – your student ID card

The u:card is your student ID in credit card format and also serves as your library card. You can apply for the u:card via u:space (“Personal matters → My u:card”) and validate it at one of the u:card terminals after you receive it!
One hand hands another hand a check card that says u:card.
4) Semester planning – how to do it!
At university, you will not receive a ready-made timetable. Instead, you have to plan your semester yourself. The most important tools for this are your degree program’s curriculum, the semester planner in u:space, and the course catalog in u:find. Important information on the basics of semester planning and orientation in the first semester can be found on the website “Studying at the University of Vienna.” The most important information on semester planning is summarized on the detail page for each degree program.
5) SSC/SSS – central contact point for students
If you don’t know which “study plan item” to select, why registration for a course or exam isn’t working, why courses can’t be found, and much more, then you’re in good hands at the SSS/SSC (Study Service Center) for your degree program.
6) ÖH University of Vienna
The ÖH (Austrian Student Union) represents the interests of students and offers many services. The Kopier-Pickerl, for example, can save you a few euros on copying during your studes. There are also various advisory services on topics such as housing rights, scholarships, grants, and discrimination.
It also has some great initiatives: mental health group offers and the ÖH helpline for mental health issues.
7) USI and Language Center
Even outside of your studies, the University of Vienna offers great opportunities to broaden your horizons. The USI (University Sports Institute) gets you moving and offers sports courses ranging from aerial dance, boxing, and diving to classic Zumba classes.
At the Language Center, you can take language courses in over 30 languages so that you can say “I already knew all that!” in Finnish, Hindi, or Korean.
