{"id":18614,"date":"2024-01-04T17:44:57","date_gmt":"2024-01-04T16:44:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.univie.ac.at\/?p=18614"},"modified":"2024-01-04T17:46:20","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T16:46:20","slug":"the-up-goer-five-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.univie.ac.at\/en\/research\/the-up-goer-five-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"The Up-Goer Five challenge: Can you explain your science using only the thousand most common English words?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">recent<\/span> years, the Up-Goer Five <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">challenge<\/span> has become <span style=\"color: #000000;\">part<\/span> of several <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">scientific<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">conferences<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">including<\/span> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lxWrerZhfrk\">AGU Fall Meeting<\/a>. This year, <a href=\"https:\/\/meetingorganizer.copernicus.org\/EGU24\/session\/49286\">it will make its <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">debut<\/span> at the EGU<\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">General Assembly<\/span>. In the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">session<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">speakers<\/span> are asked to present their <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">research<\/span> in short<br \/>\n(5-minute) talks using only the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">thousand<\/span> most <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">common<\/span> words in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">English<\/span>. The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">challenge<\/span> was<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">inspired<\/span> by an <a href=\"https:\/\/xkcd.com\/1133\/\">XKCD <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">comic<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">describing<\/span> the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Saturn<\/span> V <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Rocket<\/span> with the same <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">limited vocabulary<\/span><br \/>\n(where the word \u201eUp-Goer\u201c was used because \u201e<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Rocket<\/span>\u201c was not <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">permitted<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">aim<\/span> of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">session<\/span> is to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">motivate participants<\/span> to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">simplify<\/span> the way they <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">describe<\/span> their<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">research<\/span> to a very <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">basic level<\/span> (a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">thousand<\/span> words is a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">surprisingly modest vocabulary<\/span>). In doing<br \/>\nso, they will think about their <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">research<\/span> in new ways and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">strengthen<\/span> their <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">communication skills<\/span>.<br \/>\nAnd they (as well as the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">audience<\/span>) will have a lot of fun!<\/p>\n<p>For <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">example<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">previous<\/span> Up-Goer Five <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">sessions<\/span> at the AGU Fall Meeting <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">featured presentations<\/span><br \/>\non \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm22\/meetingapp.cgi\/Paper\/1109981\">Green and Red Lights Dancing in the Cold Night Sky<\/a>\u201c, \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm23\/meetingapp.cgi\/Paper\/1258480\">Colors of Sun Flashes: How Hot Are They?<\/a>\u201c, \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm22\/meetingapp.cgi\/Paper\/1176124\">A Friend to Help Show Little Air Rocks in Big Water<\/a>\u201c, or \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm22\/meetingapp.cgi\/Paper\/1049062\">Looking at the Sun&#8217;s Wind Where It&#8217;s Young and Weird<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>The Up-Goer Five <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">session<\/span> at the EGU <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">General Assembly<\/span> is part of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Education<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Outreach<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Programme<\/span> Group, which means that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">authors<\/span> can <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">submit<\/span> a second <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">regular abstract<\/span> to another<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">session<\/span>. If you are up for the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">challenge<\/span> and wish to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">participate<\/span> in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">session<\/span> this year, please<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">submit<\/span> an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">abstract<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">via<\/span> the <a href=\"https:\/\/meetingorganizer.copernicus.org\/EGU24\/session\/49286\">EGU <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">website<\/span><\/a> by 10 January, 13:00 CET. You can use the<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/splasho.com\/upgoer5\/\">Up-Goer Five <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">text editor<\/span><\/a> for writing, which will <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">highlight<\/span> every<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> non-permitted<\/span> word in red (like in this <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">article<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>Participants from all <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">career stages<\/span> are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">invited<\/span>, from student to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">postdoc<\/span> to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">professor<\/span>. In<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">simplifying<\/span> the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">complex<\/span>, we not only <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">redefine<\/span> our understanding but also <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">pave<\/span> the way for a<br \/>\nmore <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">engaging<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">accessible scientific discourse<\/span>.
