In recent<\/span> years, the Up-Goer Five challenge<\/span> has become part<\/span> of several scientific<\/span>
\nconferences<\/span>, including<\/span> the AGU Fall Meeting<\/a>. This year, it will make its debut<\/span> at the EGU<\/a>
\nGeneral Assembly<\/span>. In the session<\/span>, speakers<\/span> are asked to present their research<\/span> in short
\n(5-minute) talks using only the thousand<\/span> most common<\/span> words in English<\/span>. The challenge<\/span> was
\ninspired<\/span> by an XKCD comic<\/span><\/a> describing<\/span> the Saturn<\/span> V Rocket<\/span> with the same limited vocabulary<\/span>
\n(where the word \u201eUp-Goer\u201c was used because \u201eRocket<\/span>\u201c was not permitted<\/span>).<\/p>\n

The aim<\/span> of the session<\/span> is to motivate participants<\/span> to simplify<\/span> the way they describe<\/span> their
\nresearch<\/span> to a very basic level<\/span> (a thousand<\/span> words is a surprisingly modest vocabulary<\/span>). In doing
\nso, they will think about their research<\/span> in new ways and strengthen<\/span> their communication skills<\/span>.
\nAnd they (as well as the audience<\/span>) will have a lot of fun!<\/p>\n

For example<\/span>, previous<\/span> Up-Goer Five sessions<\/span> at the AGU Fall Meeting featured presentations<\/span>
\non \u201eGreen and Red Lights Dancing in the Cold Night Sky<\/a>\u201c, \u201eColors of Sun Flashes: How Hot Are They?<\/a>\u201c, \u201eA Friend to Help Show Little Air Rocks in Big Water<\/a>\u201c, or \u201eLooking at the Sun’s Wind Where It’s Young and Weird<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n

The Up-Goer Five session<\/span> at the EGU General Assembly<\/span> is part of the Education<\/span> and Outreach<\/span>
\nProgramme<\/span> Group, which means that authors<\/span> can submit<\/span> a second regular abstract<\/span> to another
\nsession<\/span>. If you are up for the challenge<\/span> and wish to participate<\/span> in the session<\/span> this year, please
\nsubmit<\/span> an abstract<\/span> via<\/span> the EGU website<\/span><\/a> by 10 January, 13:00 CET. You can use the
\nUp-Goer Five text editor<\/span><\/a> for writing, which will highlight<\/span> every non-permitted<\/span> word in red (like in this article<\/span>).<\/p>\n

Participants from all career stages<\/span> are invited<\/span>, from student to postdoc<\/span> to professor<\/span>. In
\nsimplifying<\/span> the complex<\/span>, we not only redefine<\/span> our understanding but also pave<\/span> the way for a
\nmore engaging<\/span> and accessible scientific discourse<\/span>. Let your work be bright in the world of easy
