“Experiencing Vienna around 1900 with the univie: winter school”

“I am a doctoral student at the University of Kyoto at the faculty of clinical pedagogy, with a personal focus on Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalysis. As a citizen of an East Asian country, I try to understand Western thoughts and ideas. Despite the differences in culture, many social systems were taken from the West. The same goes for the field of education. With the introduction of the Western school system, the underlying Western view of human beings has also been imported and influenced Japanese traditional thoughts. In considering the issue of education, I study the thought of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis. He is not seen as an educational thinker, but through his view, we can think about human formation including the deep understanding of human unconsciousness. This is why I decided to attend the univie: winter school for Cultural Historical Studies in January 2020. “Vienna around 1900” is exactly where and when Freud lived.

The contents of the lecture over 12 days were wonderful. In the course of literature, I studied a wide variety of issues, not only literature but also the social and political situation of Vienna, centered on the novelist Arthur Schnitzler who worked in Vienna in 1900. Above all, the peculiarities of Austria different from Germany were very interesting to me.

The course of psychoanalysis gave me a continuous new understanding of Freud’s thought and his personality. Thanks to the winter school, I could ask the involved professor many questions of psychoanalysis, which I have gotten through reading books. The professor politely suggested her views, which helped me to grasp Freud’s personal figures connected to his ordinary life. At the University of Vienna, I studied Freud as not just a great thinker, but a man who lived surrounded by the culture of Vienna in 1900. Therefore, I recommend to join the winter school to those, who are interested in various aspects related to Vienna and its cultural and scientific fields. The opportunity to get in touch with specified professors, students from all over the world, who join the winter school, was unique. The new views and insights I got through the seminars helped me to widen my personal and scientific view and thoughts on Freud, Psychoanalysis and Education.

I often went to classical concerts, operas, and galleries. The city which produced many philosophers and thinkers is also full of sophisticated senses. For me, Austria and Vienna are completely different cultures far from my home country. There is very little that can be understood in two weeks. But winter school has allowed me to get the best opportunity to gain experience from it in a short time. Furthermore, it encouraged me to continue my professional career and my postdoc studies in Europe. I am already looking forward to coming back to this city again.” – Yuho Goto

Human of #univie Tomas: When do things go quantum?

“We have all heard of the weirdness of quantum mechanics. Things that appear to be in multiple places simultaneously, others that are correlated over long distances, properties that manifest only when you measure them and particles behaving like waves… But why do we not see such things in our everyday lives? When do things “go … Continued
