What can I study at the University of Vienna?
From A for African Studies to Z for Zoology: choose a degree programme from our wide range of options. Can’t find your desired degree programme on the list? Then we don’t offer it here.
Once you have selected a degree programme on our website, you will find all the facts & figures and information on the structure and content of the programme. Some degree programmes also have an Online-Self-Assessment (OSA). This is an interactive questionnaire that you can use to find out whether the degree programme is right for you. Please note: Most OSAs are only available in German!
An entrance exam procedure is conducted for many degree programmes . Pay particular attention to the application periods! You can only apply for admission to these degree programmes once a year.
I have decided on a degree programme. How can I apply?
To apply, you must submit an application for admission to the degree programme. We explain which documents you need and when the deadlines are on our website on the admission procedure. There you can select your degree programme from the list. Your steps in the admission procedure depend on three questions:
- Where is your secondary-school leaving certificate/degree from?
- What is your citizenship?
- How good are your German/English skills?
Select the button that applies to you on the website. You will then receive a step-by-step guide through the admission procedure.
When can I apply?
Submit your application for admission to the degree programme within the appropriate application period. Please note: This period depends on your citizenship and your chosen degree programme. So take a look at our deadlines as early as possible! If you have applied for the degree programme in good time and meet all the requirements, you can complete the admission procedure within the admission period.

Which documents do I need for my application?
That depends on what you want to study and which country issued your documents. We recommend that you select your degree programme on our website about the admission procedure. There we will tell you exactly which documents you need.
Do I have to know German to be admitted to the University of Vienna?
That depends on what you want to study.
German-language bachelor/diploma programmes:
Here you need proof of German language skills.
- When applying for admission to the degree programme: at least level A2
- To be admitted to the degree programme: level C1
Bilingual/English-language bachelor programmes:
- For the bilingual bachelor programme in International Legal Studies, in addition to German language skills (see above), you need proof of English language skills at level B2 when you apply for admission.
- When applying for admission to the English-language bachelor programme Mathematical Foundations of Data Science, you only need English language skills at level B2. German language skills are not required.
Master programmes:
Whether or not you need German language skills depends on the master programme in question. For some programmes, you will need to prove your knowledge of German and sometimes another language. In other cases, a proof of English language skills is sufficient. You can find a list of foreign-language degree programmes on our website. There you can also see which language certificates you need.

How much does it cost to study at the University of Vienna?
To study at the University of Vienna, you must pay the prescribed tuition/Students’ union fee each semester within the payment period. You can find out how much you have to pay and which payment options you have on our website on the amount of the tuition fee/Students’ Union fee.
Student’s Union fee:
All students in Austria pay the Students’ Union fee every semester. This is how you re-enrol your studies. The amount of the Students’ Union fee is determined by the Austrian National Union of Students.
Tuition fee:
Whether you are required to pay tuition fee depends on your citizenship and the duration of your studies.
